Nizamuddin Basti,India: U.S. Ambassador awards English Microscholarships – India Education Diary

New Delhi: Today, the U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer awarded certificates to 100 new microscholarship recipients in the English Access Microscholarship Program at the MCD Primary School, Nizamuddin Basti. This two-year Access program is an initiative of the U.S. Embassy in cooperation with the Aga Khan Foundation which has been working in India for over 15 years on improving schools and educational opportunities for poor and marginalized groups. Ambassador Roemer has awarded certificates and met with students in New Delhi, Orissa, and Kolkata to promote the critical value of education.

In January 2010, the Aga Khan Foundation began implementing the English Access Microscholarship Program for 100 students residing in the Nizamuddin Basti. The U.S. Embassy funds the program and awards microscholarships which provide a foundation course of English language skills to talented 14-18-year olds from economically-disadvantaged sectors.

At the award ceremony, Ambassador Roemer said, “Access to education is an important commitment and value the people of the United States of America share with India. English is the common language that unites the citizens of both our countries. This program gives students, who might otherwise not have the opportunity, the chance to acquire basic English language skills that lead to jobs! These students will also have opportunities for future educational opportunities and exchange programs in the U.S., further strengthening the robust exchange of ideas and people-to-people ties that are the hallmark and catalyst of our countries’ bold partnership.”
