His Highness the Aga Khan is the inaugural recipient of the Adrienne Clarkson Prize for Global Citizenship, awarded annually to a leader whose life has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the ideals of belonging and inclusion.
His Highness the Aga Khan is the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, a global, multi-ethnic community. The Imam’s mandate includes improving the quality of life of community members and of the wider society. His Highness has dedicated his life’s work to improving living conditions for the world’s most vulnerable populations, and to fostering an understanding of pluralism’s importance to global harmony.
To achieve these goals, His Highness established the Aga Khan Development Network, currently active in 30 countries and employing approximately 80,000 people. AKDN’s non-denominational agencies are responsible for areas ranging from health and education to rural development, architecture, culture and economic sustainability.
