Foreign Minister Steinmeier: We must not permit the two-state solution to become an empty phrase — Federal Foreign Office, Germany

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has welcomed the appeal by his United States counterpart John Kerry for a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. In a keynote speech in Washington on Wednesday (28 December), the US Secretary of State called on Palestinians and Israelis to adhere to a two-state solution. He also defended his government’s decision not to block a UN settlements resolution last Friday (23 December).

In a “passionate and deeply felt address, John Kerry today reiterated the principles of a two‑state solution,” Steinmeier stated on Wednesday evening (28 December). He went on to say that Kerry reaffirmed that “there is only one realistic way to end this conflict.” Namely, by engaging in negotiations on a two‑state solution with the aim of two states, a Jewish, democratic Israel and a viable, democratic Palestine, living side by side in peace, respect and security.

We must not permit the two-state solution to become an empty phrase

“Kerry’s speech comes as a reminder and a call to both sides. It tells us that we must not permit the two‑state solution to become an empty phrase. And it entreats both sides to clearly demonstrate their commitment to the two‑state solution and to take steps on the ground to underpin this commitment,” Steinmeier said. Together with its partners in the EU, Germany remains ready to play its part for peace.

Commitment to a peaceful solution

Foreign Minister Steinmeier also praised his US colleague’s commitment to a peaceful solution: “Ever since becoming Secretary of State, my friend John Kerry has worked tirelessly to promote a peaceful solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.”

UN Security Council Resolution concerning Israeli settlements

Last Friday (23 December), the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Israeli settlement activities. The Deputy Government Spokesperson issued the following statement on the UN resolution: “In terms of substance, it does reflect the position of this Federal Government and of its predecessors. Our Government is working to promote a two-state solution, rejects settlement activities, and condemns violence of any kind.”
