According to a survey carried out by the British broadcaster BBC, Germany is held in higher regard than any other of the 28 states featured. It has thus topped the international poll for the second time in a row. 59 per cent of those surveyed believed that Germany’s influence in the world is positive. Germany was regarded particularly positively in France and South Korea.

In a total of 24 states, those questioned expressed a positive view of Germany. Just as last year, therefore, Germany topped the international popularity poll. Japan came in second (53 per cent positive rating), followed by Britain, Canada and France. The BBC has been canvassing opinions about the influence of nations since 2005. This year, 30,000 people in 28 states were surveyed.

Germany held in high regard on all continents

Particularly positive reactions to Germany’s role in the world came from our French neighbours (84 per cent), as well as from Italy (79 per cent) and South Korea (82 per cent). However, Germany also scored well on other continents. For instance, 75 per cent of those interviewed in Kenya took a positive view of Germany’s influence, as did 70 per cent in Brazil and 65 per cent in Australia. In Egypt, Germany was only viewed positively by 50 per cent of those surveyed but this figure was 11 per cent higher than the previous year.

Perceptions around the world on the role of the European Union as a whole are also largely positive (53 per cent). The EU is particularly popular in Germany (71 per cent), France (64 per cent) and Italy (64 per cent). Even in the 22 non EU countries among the 28 states included in the poll, the EU’s influence is viewed positively on the whole (a 49 per cent positive score compared to 19 per cent negative). However, there are considerable differences from country to country. In Russia, the EU’s standing rose within a year by 19 per cent to a 50 per cent positive score.

  1. Karen says:

I agree that Germany is the most popular country, and many other polls on an aol website say the same. Maybe l`m biased as l am half german, and like to visit there a lot, but there was one web site, http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/travel/ which stated the oposite point of view, in fact that Germany was the LEAST popular country. Obviously l don`t agree with them as their findings are completely at odds with all the other websites and l have told them this, and am hoping they will reply. lf you think their findings are wrong, are you able to comment on this? if you are, or can, it would be very much appreciated.
